Reflection:
The nursing classroom updates took several months. The following steps occurred:
-
The nursing department first requested head AV tech, Brian Varcos to visit the two classrooms to give them an estimate on needed updates and cost.
-
Brain estimated that each classroom needed a new TV, a new document camera and HDMI switchers to allow all the hardware to function.
-
Brian decided to pull two teacher work stations out of storage to use in each classroom, and that the desktop computers and DVD players were still in good working order to repurpose as well.
-
He also pulled two Bose ceiling speakers out of storage, had holes cut and installed them in the ceiling
-
He sent his list of the new items needed to three companies for a quote. Star Audio/Visual came in with the lowest quote and Brian arranged for the new items to be purchased.
-
Work orders were put in so the facilities department could pull the teacher workstations out of storage and install the ceiling speakers
-
Once new items were in, we arranged two days with the nursing department to get into each respective classroom to set up the new items.
Installing the new items went smoothly until we realized that facilities never ran the speaker cable to the front of the room when they installed the speakers in the ceiling. This required us to remove the speakers from the ceiling, connect and chain the speakers together and run the cable through the ceiling to the front of the classroom. Like the camera install project, this install was also filled with obstacales that you cannot exactly plan for.
This was a very interesting project. It was great to see the install from beginning to end in order to understand the entire process. It wasn't just about buying and installing new equipment. It required budgeting, gathering materials for repurpose, and communicating between departments. It made me understand why these things take so much time.
